When his family moved to Spencer County in 1816, young Abe regularly made the trek into Boonville to borrow books and watch local attorney John Brackenridge argue cases in the courthouse. Historians credit Boonville with being the place "where Lincoln learned the law," and the Warrick County Courthouse that helped shape him still sits at the center of the Public Square Historic District today. Boonville also sent Ratliff Boon, the man the city is actually named for, to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Indiana and acting Governor in 1822, a fact that tends to surprise people who think the "Boon" is just a general good omen.
