Picture this: it's July 18, 1862. A Confederate colonel named Adam "Stovepipe" Johnson rows across the Ohio River with a small band of soldiers and successfully captures Newburgh, making it the first town north of the Mason-Dixon Line to fall to Confederate forces during the Civil War. The twist? His "cannons" were a stovepipe, a charred log, and wagon wheels propped up to look like artillery from across the water. The Union defenders surrendered rather than test that bluff. The Exchange Hotel where this drama played out still stands in historic downtown Newburgh today. Speaking of history with staying power, the first underground mine shaft in Indiana was sunk right here in Newburgh in 1850, when coal mining drove the town's growth as a major riverport between Cincinnati and New Orleans. The railroad bypassed Newburgh entirely in favor of Evansville a few decades later, which ironically preserved much of the town's historic core. Today, that 27-building Historic Preservation District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
