Fun Facts About Princeton
Princeton got its name through a coin flip. Literally. When early commissioners met in 1814 to pick a county seat for Gibson County, they drew lots among themselves to decide the name, and Irish immigrant Captain William Prince won the draw, immortalizing himself by giving the city his surname. He probably didn't expect it to last, but here we are. Long before Toyota arrived, Princeton was already putting itself on the map in unexpected ways. Lyles Station, a small community just west of town, was founded in 1849 by Joshua Lyles, a freed slave from Tennessee, and became a documented haven for freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad crossing the Ohio River. The city's most sobering chapter came in 1925, when the Great Tri-State Tornado, the deadliest tornado in U.S. history, tore through Gibson County and claimed more than 35 lives in Princeton alone. The county rebuilt, and then kept building. In 1998, Toyota opened its manufacturing plant just south of town and changed everything, drawing a full ecosystem of suppliers and support businesses that still employ thousands of people today.
