Chandler's ground has been busy for a long time. Before the neighborhoods and subdivisions, Warrick County's eastern edge was rich with coal, sitting on the Illinois Basin, and the area drew mining companies starting in 1875 when the first underground shaft, Chandler Mine, broke ground. At its peak, six different underground mines operated in and around town, fueling the region's economy well into the 20th century. By the mid-1940s, the mines had all shuttered, but what replaced them was a building boom. Within five years of the last mine closing, houses started going up across the landscape faster than anyone had predicted, and the population more than doubled. That pattern has more or less continued ever since. Today Chandler is Warrick County's second-most populous municipality, growing at about 1.5% per year with a median household income over $74,000. It shares the Ohio Township Public Library with Newburgh, and its families are plugged into the same top-rated Warrick County schools.
